Experiences of Educators of Color in the Public School System and in NYCoRE

This month’s political education piece will be facilitated by members of the Educators of Color (EoC) affinity group.

RSVP HERE

In the final NYCoRE Member Meeting of this school year, we will be looking at experiences of educators of color in the public school system. Additionally, we will look at experiences of educators of color in NYCoRE, the history of educators of color within NYCoRE, and reflect on how responsible we are as a collective to our values and our points of unity. We will take time to reflect on our individual experiences as educators with an eye toward building a more genuinely anti-racist and inclusive NYCoRE space in the upcoming school year.

In Working Groups, we will reflect on and celebrate this past year and share out our successes with the whole group.

Please remember to RSVP to give us an accurate head count for food! Also, please bring reusable food containers and utensils… let’s be radical in all aspects of our lives!

Time: 5:30-8:00pm

This meeting will include political education and working group breakout time, as well as end of year reflection and celebration.

Location: NYU Pless Hall 3rd Floor Lounge

RSVP for Our May 20th Member Meeting

Immigration Enforcement, Law Enforcement, and Educational Justice

Join us Friday, May 20th for our monthly member meeting. This month’s Political Education will be facilitated by members of NYCoRE’s Teach Dream Working Group.

In April, we discussed the intersections of the prison abolition movement and educational justice. In this month’s meeting, Teach Dream (a working group of NYCoRE) will continue this conversation by exploring the connections between immigration enforcement and law enforcement. The United States has a long history of using policing and borders to perpetuate racism and capitalism. We will read, discuss, and draw ways that we as educators in particular can resist and support resistance in order to imagine and bring forth a world without borders and without police.

Check out these two actions to support undocumented and immigrant youth and families:

To learn more about these actions, join us on May 20th!

Note: Credit for much of the political analysis in this workshop goes to the Black Lives Matter movement, the ICEfreeNYC coalition, Families for Freedom and the New York State Youth Leadership Council.

Please remember to RSVP to give us an accurate head count for food as well as bring reusable food containers and utensils. Let’s try to be radical in all aspects of our lives!

RSVP for January’s Member Meeting!

This month’s

NYCoRE Member Meeting

Facilitated by members of the New Teacher Underground Working Group!

The New Teacher-ization of Education: Where does it fit into the puzzle of educational justice?

Programs like Teach for America exist in order to fill the so-called teacher shortage. As a collective of new and veteran teachers, we have to ask: Why does the teacher shortage exist in the first place? What makes it difficult to recruit teachers, and what makes it difficult for teachers to stay? What’s the deal with the “new teacher-ization” of education?

At this month’s member meeting, facilitated by members of the New Teacher Underground Working Group, we will be exploring the connections between the issues impacting new teachers and the many-headed hydra of market-driven school reform.

We will generate ideas, tools and resources among new and veteran teachers around these issues.

Working Groups will also meet this week!

Please remember to RSVP to give us an accurate head count for food as well as bring reusable food containers and utensils. Let’s try to be radical in all aspects of our lives!
