NYQueer is a working group of the New York Collective of Radical Educators (NYCoRE) that focuses on gender and sexuality as they relate to school communities. We believe that educators of all age groups can and should address issues of gender and sexuality in the classroom. Through regular meetings, special events, group actions and online communication, we aim to increase access to resources that help teachers and schools in their efforts to form safe, inclusive environments that welcome and support individual differences of identity and self-expression. NYQueer seeks to create opportunities for teachers to make connections with community organizers as well as fellow educators engaged in the work of supporting members of the queer community, particularly LGBTQ youth. Additionally we have the long-term goal of developing campaigns that will put pressure on governmental organizations such as the NYC Department of Education to make systematic changes that would have a positive impact on schools citywide.
