Film Screening & Discussion

For over 20 years, global economic forces have been dismantling public education in Mexico, but always in the constant shadow of popular resistance...

Nominated for the International Documentary Association’s 2005 Pare Lorentz Award

Granito de Arena is the story of that resistance – the story of hundreds of thousands of public schoolteachers whose grassroots, non-violent movement took Mexico by surprise, and who have endured brutal repression in their 25-year struggle to defend public education.

5:30 pm – 7:30
CUNY Graduate Center - 34th St and 5th Ave.
Room 5414 – Please Bring ID

Information and Comments about the Film:

“An essential, resounding, overwhelming story.  The film is a cry of outrage; the message, a cry of hope.” - Pablo Gentili, Public Policy Laboratory, Rio de Janeiro

Award-winning Seattle filmmaker, Jill Freidberg (This is What Democracy Looks Like), spent two years in southern Mexico documenting the efforts of over 100,000 teachers, parents, and students fighting to defend the country’s public education system. Freidberg combines footage of strikes and direct actions with 25 years worth of never-before-seen archival images to deliver a compelling and unsettling story of resistance, repression, commitment, and solidarity.

“Important...disturbing...Anyone concerned about education, human rights, labor unions, Latin America and globalization will want to see this inspiring film.”
 - Mexican Labor News and Analysis

Granito de Arena also gives voice to the increasing number of teachers who believe their  movement is in crisis and who are exploring community-based alternatives in their struggle to defend public education. Featuring a driving soundtrack by DJ Food, Slowrider, PlanB, and Los Mocosos, Granito de Arena fuels indignation, inspires action, and raises important questions about democracy, sovereignty,
and the universal right to public education.

“An inspiring glimpse into the power of collective action, one that’s certainly relevant to people in this country as well.” - City Pages, Minneapolis-St Paul

* NYCoRE is committed to continue raising awareness about issues of injustice around the world and understanding how educators participate in social change.

The NYCoRE Oaxacan Consciousness & Resource Raising events aim to inform local communities about the social and political movements in Oaxaca and to build solidarity. In addition the events seek to raise funds for educators who are interested in deepening their understanding through the NYCoRE trip to Oaxaca in August, as well as gather resources for a grassroots media group working in Oaxaca.
