NYQueer is a group of teachers focused on gender and sexuality as they relate to school communities. The daily pressures of teaching students at any level (K-12) are such that teachers often feel as if they do not have the time, the support, or access to the resources they need for addressing gender and sexuality in the classroom. More specifically, they are unsure how to challenge homophobic assumptions and combat homophobia. Recognizing the wealth of resources that both individuals and organizations throughout the city have to offer in this area, NYQueer is planning a one day event that aims to unite students, teachers and community organizers for the purpose of building a stronger solidarity network and increasing awareness about existing resources and possibilities.

Students or Soldiers?
New York City Students are entitled to explore a wide range of college and career options. Yet in many schools, the ones most actively reaching out to them are the military recruiters. The NYC City Department of Education continually refuses to take responsibility for protecting its students. There are regular reports of recruiters in classrooms, of wholesale violations of student and parent privacy rights, and a lack of a full range of career opportunities for NYC students.

Join us as elected officials, advocates, and youth experts examine the problem of unrestricted military recruitment, the availability of meaningful alternatives to military service and the effect of unbridled recruitment on the lives of New York City youth.

1968 Revisited: Ocean Hill Brownsville and
Community Control of Schools

APRIL 10
7:30 - 9:00 p.m.

The Brecht Forum 451 West Street (Between Bank and Bethune) 212-242-4201

A Panel Discussion with Sally Lee, Roberta Harris, Jitu Weusi, Edwin Mayogra and Stanley Aronowitz

Co-Sponsored by The Brecht Forum, NYCoRE

In 1968, Ocean Hill-Brownsville Brooklyn was the site of an experiment that gave local communities control of their public schools. The controversy sparked from this movement still resonates throughout the city. This panel discussion will explore the political moment that gave rise to the community control experiment and will attempt to compare it to today's context. How are NYC communities responding to the current mayoral control of our public schools? How do these contrasting forms of school governance impact classroom teaching and learning?
